came to english - speaking people from the scandivavian forebearers and pagan ceremonies. "yule" comes from "rol," a wheel that indicates the changing of seasons. (see earlier eniteris about sabbats of the year.) for many centuries fire had been the symbol of the home ("harth") and safety. not only was it warmth satisfying but served to light the home after the sun went down. when the celts and teutons commerated the return of the sun- the source of light, heat and even life it's self - fire naturally played a signifant part... the druids fullyselected a large log, perferably from a fruit - bearing tree, like apple and at other times from a long lasting one like oat. at a solem gathering they blessed and prayed over it, that it might last forever. generally a piece of the old long was kept to satrt the fire next year.
